NorEastCon 2010 Contest Judging
The Long Island Scale Model Society will use traditional IPMS 1-2-3 Category Judging for NorEastCon 2010. With the recent announcement by IPMS/USA rescinding their restrictions on judging criteria at Regional contests, the Executive Board and show planning committee was faced with a choice – continue with the traditional 1-2-3 criteria, or shift Armor, Diorama and Figure categories to Open (Gold-Silver-Bronze) judging as used at our annual RepLIcon show. Much thought and discussion went into this decision by the Board and planning committee.
LISMS first broached the subject of hosting a NorEastCon in 2008. At that time, 1-2-3 judging was the only system authorized for use at IPMS/USA National and Regional shows. After months of work, we were able to secure the use of the American Airpower Museum for the show. We were able to move forward with our hosting bid, which was confirmed at the most recent NorEastCon in Buffalo in April 2009. At that time, when show planning began in earnest, IPMS/USA still required the use of 1-2-3 judging at Regional shows, and our planning for judges, categories and trophy packages reflected this.
Given the timing of the announcement by IPMS/USA, the Board and planning committee felt it was in the best interests of the show to move forward using 1-2-3 judging. Categories have been established, trophy packages were designed and approved, and sponsorship requests have been submitted to vendors and other supporters. Show flyers have been prepared and distributed, and information has been submitted to magazines and other publications. All this was done with the approval and acceptance by IPMS/USA, in accordance with their existing Regional guidelines.
The Board and committee felt that to change the judging criteria in more than one third of the announced categories would have led to disruptions, delays, and additional costs. Such a change would have necessitated revising and re-distributing flyers, changing advertising submissions, sponsorship information, and redesigning trophies, all of which may have financial implications. To ensure the best chance for a successful NorEastCon, the Board and committee decided it was appropriate not to change judging criteria at this relatively late date. This decision was not made lightly.
This is in no way meant as a slight to those who prefer an Open judging system, nor does it mean that LISMS will not return to that system in appropriate categories at future RepLIcon shows. It is simply the best effort by the Executive Board and show planning committee to host the best NorEastCon we possibly can.
